The new My People feature for Windows 10 Fall Creators Update is designed to streamline communication with the handful of people you communicate with most often. You will know that you have “My People” when the new icon, which consists of two headers outlines, appears in the notification area of the system tray after upgrading to the new version.
The idea behind My People is that it makes it easier for you to email, chat with them (both text and video), or send files or media to your closest contacts, friends and loved ones. It also introduces a nice instant emoji notification for the closest contacts. In an appealing way, My People is designed so that you don’t have to open separate apps to do all of these things.
At this early stage, only email, Skype, and emoji sending features are enabled, but any UWP app can benefit from them. I have no doubt that Facebook Messenger and other messaging apps will be available to connect to My People in no time.
I tested the new feature on a Microsoft Surface Book with a Core i5 CPU and 8 GB of RAM that is running the 64-bit update for Windows 10 Fall Creators.
1. First steps
After updating to Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, this new icon will appear in the notification area of the taskbar. Tap on it to get started.
2. Connect apps
Before you can use My People, you need to connect the communication apps that it will work with. Only Skype and Mail are currently available. If you’ve signed in to your email accounts in the Email and Skype apps, they’re already connected. Plus, the People Address Book app is connected right from the start.
3. Find and pin
If you’re upgrading a PC that you’ve been using for a long time, you’ll see your five suggested contacts. On a new computer, you can simply select Find and Pin Contacts at the bottom of the people bar. Tap here to see all the contacts in your address book. You can only pin three contacts to your system tray as circular icons, but you can add more to the My People bar yourself.
5. Use my people
At this point, as expected, I was only able to interact via Skype or email. The cool thing about My People, however, is that you don’t have to open the separate Mail or Skype apps to send emails or chat. You can even read previous emails with the friend in the small window. However, voice or video calls with Skype open the separate app window. With e-mail and chat, everything happens right in the little pinned window.
6. The best: emoji
This is the cutest part of my people. When a pinned contact sends you an emoji from Skype, its pinned icon shows it as a large, unmistakable, animated smiley face.
